Last weekend we had a total of 9 athletes from Raincity of Athletics competing at the 2014 WCTC Winter challenge and right there with them was a “Sea of Green” (sweaters) aka the amazing support crew from Raincity Athletics who came came out to cheer on our athletes & help out at the event.
The Winter Challenge (previously the Taranis Challenge) is a 3-day event designed to push each and every athlete outside their comfort zone, force them to dig deep and through the competition experience, help them become better Crossfitters.
For some of our athletes this Competition was one of many under their belt, and for others it was their very first time stepping out onto the competition floor, but each and every one of them came away from the experience better athletes than they went in because – in my opinion – you can often learn more from 1 competition than you can from months of training
Jamie Almond who said she “never PRs more than 5 lbs at at time” hit a 140lb (15lb PR) clean on Day 1 and followed that up with 12 unbroken chest-to-bar pullups (her goal going in was 2!).
Taban Abdouljabber – who was one of if not the smallest athlete on the floor – cleaned 115lbs and then did 5 chest-to-bar pullups on a rig so high for her that at one point I saw Jesse Bifano lifting her up to the pullup bar, she got her first CTB pullup a mere days earlier!
Vilius Uloza added 20lb to his previous max, hit a 245lb power clean and made it look easy.
Derek Bedry hit 245lbs for his clean (matching his current max) and followed that up with an unbroken set of 31 chest to bar pullups)
And lets not forget Simon Damborg aka Coach Thor (and his beard/meggings) and his 315lb (which he hasn’t successfully hit in over 3 years) then followed it up with 31 chest to bar pullups as he knew he had to beat #RaincityGenesis’ 30 pullups.
And that was only Day 1. Over the rest of the weekend each and every athlete dug deep, pushed themselves outside their comfort zone and made us proud to call them #RAthletes.
After 3 long, hard days of Competition Team Raincity Athletics finished in 26th place and for the individuals, rankings were as follows
Taban Abdouljabber 39th
Jamie Almond 38th
Derek Bedry 40th Place
Volius Uloza 39th
Simon Damborg 12th

All of our athletes had good moments, and moments when they struggled but it seems as though everyone came away from the Winter Challenge hungry for more & ready to start attacking their weaknesses to prepare for next time. All of the Coaches at Raincity are SO proud of all of our RAthletes, and our community as a whole. It was incredible to see Raincity out in full force in ALL aspects, huge support crew of cheering, 9 athletes on the workout floor, and SO MANY VOLUNTEERS! It was great to see the green hoodies and the Raincity smiles in every part of the competition, I know the competing RAthletes were all pretty happy to see so many familiar faces out there with them as well.
We’d love for you to comment on this post with your favorite moments from the weekend, whether you were a spectator, volunteer, or competing RAhlete!
