I am 66; have rheumatoid arthritis; work 12 hour days – and I love CrossFit!
I’ve always been active, but hate running, gyms and don’t play sports.
But now I’m leaving work early to get to CrossFit. The coaching is superb. There is no risk of injury with the close attention everyone receives from the inspiring coaches. Everyone supports one another. There is no ego. And we all agree the best thing about the workouts is how great we feel After CrossFit ends! Awesome!
From coach Thor:
Susan started with us when we used to run a ‘CrossFit Lite’ program in the evenings, her kids CrossFit at one of our sister gyms CrossFit West 10, and she wanted to get into it. This was a CrossFit class with less barbell work (no olympic lifting, no complex gymnastics) that we eventually had to cancel as our regular CrossFit classes were filling up and needed the time slot. When the time came to cancel Susan refused to stop coming, and asked if I thought she could complete our OnRamp and join our regular classes. I told her it wouldn’t be easy, but she should definitely give it a shot!
Flash forward to almost a year later; Susan has competed in the CrossFit open with us, and has attended over 70 classes! She’s a well known face amongst the community and throughout Raincity Athletics as she’s always got a smile on her face even while she’s grinding through long workouts alongside members less than 1/3rd her age!
Here’s a little more about Susan for our members who didn’t know:
Dr Burgess has practised in Vancouver’s inner city in home hospice/palliative care, family medicine, and outreach for almost 20 years. Before that she spent many years working in the Northwest Territories, and she has taught at Queen’s University. She is currently the acting president of the Vancouver Community Medical Staff Association, an executive of the Vancouver Medical Association, and a clinical associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at UBC. She lives happily in Vancouver with her husband and two daughters.
All I can say to all this is, what’s your excuse?
